The Smith Valley Fire Protection District was established in 1945, is a rural volunteer district that provides fire, rescue and ambulance services to the 182 square mile District and an additional 300 square miles of Lyon County in western Nevada. The area includes a mainly agricultural and residential community, mountainous and rugged back country terrain and the East and West Forks of the Walker River.  The District lies about 10 miles east of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. There are rivers popular with fishermen, agricultural land, abundant wildlife and a rural residential population. The district serves approximately 1,680 residents. 

The District responds to incidents ranging from structure and wildland fires to automobile accidents and emergency medical incidents. The District has fifteen active volunteers with a long history of dedication to the fire and emergency medical service.
